Strong victims might get away with a broken bone, more unfortunate ones will become crippled for life. Ethereal beings are rarely hurt by the spell.

There is no doubt that the most famous of all Finnish composers mustbe Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), a masterly symphonist who captured the spirit andhistory of his own country in a series of symphonies, tone-poems and otherworks. Finlandia, in particular, became a symbol of the country’sstruggle for independence, a cause in which Sibelius was closely involved. Itwas written in 1899 as part of the music for the press pensions celebration ofthat year, an event that was transformed into a patriotic demonstration againstRussian power. Valse triste, which won widespread popularity in avariety of arrangements but made little money for the composer, was composed in1903 to accompany a death scene in a play by SibeliusEbrother-in-law, ArvidJärnefelt. Leevi Madetoja (1887-1947) was a pupil of Sibelius in Helsinki andlater of Vincent d’Indy in Paris and Robert Fuchs in Vienna. He had a careeras a conductor, teacher, critic and composer, and won particular success withhis opera Pohjalaisia (The Ostrobothnians), composed in 1923, staged in1935 and generally regarded as the first significant Finnish contribution tothe genre. His Elegy for Strings forms part of his Symphonic Suite,Opus 4, of 1910. Born in the previous decade, Erkki Melartin (1875-1937) studied inHelsinki and with Fuchs in Vienna, then broadening his education with furthertravel and study before returning to Finland, where he spent a number of yearsas director of the Helsinki Music Institute. Like Madetoja, he belongs to thegeneration of nationalist composers following Sibelius. Prolific as a composerboth of lighter and of more serious music, he is widely remembered for hispopular Festive March, heard at many Finnish weddings and taken fromMelartin’s incidental music to the play Prinsessa Ruusunea (SleepingBeauty). The Wedding March by Toivo Kuula (1883-1918), whose promise asa leading composer in the generation after Sibelius was cut short by his deathafter the Finnish Civil War, enjoys similar popularity. Armas Järnefelt (1869-1958), another brother-in-law of Sibelius and amember of a family of distinguished talent and strongly nationalist sympathies, studied with Martin Wegelius and Ferruccio Busoni in Helsinki, in Berlin andthen in Paris with Massenet. For a number of years he was principal conductorat the Royal Opera in Stockholm, while as a composer he is chiefly rememberedfor his Praeludium and Berceuse, the popularity of which haseclipsed other works of his. Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924) played an important part in Finnishmusical life. His numerous piano pieces enjoyed domestic popularity, togetherwith his many songs and he made a significant contribution to the developmentof church music in Finland and to operatic performance. His Romance andValse lente have been orchestrated for the present recording by JormaPanula. The reputation of Heino Kaski (1885-1957) depends largely on his pianomusic and one of his best known pieces is his Prelude in G flat major, which he also arranged for orchestra. A composer of another kind is HeikkiAaltoila (1905-1992), who wrote music for 150 plays and more than 75 films. Hisbest known work is his Wedding Waltz of Akseli and Elina, written forEdvin Laine’s film Here beneath the North Star. Even better known inFinland must be the Finnish Prayer by Taneli Kusisto (1905-1988), asetting of words by Uuno Kailas, here orchestrated by Jorma Panula. Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928- ) belongs to a younger generation, apupil of Merikanto in Helsinki and then of Vincent Persichetti, Aaron Coplandand Roger Sessions in America, following this with study in Ascona withWladimir Vogel and in Cologne with Rudolf Petzold. He has remained open to awider range of contemporary influences. Fiddlers, Opus 1, was written in1952 and is derived from folk material. From a rather earlier generation, Uuno Klami (1900-1961) alsorepresents a move away from romantic nationalism towards a wider spectrum ofinfluences, creating synthesis between Finnish thematic material and stylisticinfluences from abroad. He studied intermittently, as funds allowed, inHelsinki and then spent a year in Paris, returning to demonstrate a command oforchestration that reflected the influence of Ravel. His Sea Pictures,of which the movement Nocturne (Song of the Watch) is here included, dates from the early 1930s, a reminder of his own early memories of the sea, near which he spent his childhood. Aulis Sallinen (1935- ) is among the most distinguished ofcontemporary Finnish composers, significant for his operas as for hiscontribution to may different genres of music. Sunrise Serenade followedSallinen’s opera Kullervo and is scored for strings, two trumpets andpiano, a depiction of the transition from dark to light, a message ofoptimism. You smile at me from portraits Omnipresent, your brand in every gadget Supported by your fans Serene they talk to me With the calm of who is beyond all Without he knows anything Things go strange The avalanche swells What an unexpected success When you invented the story we know You were just trying to save your ass A smart move People put stones down Somebody had business sense He set a new trend Omnipresent, your brand in every gadget A reign that invoices more than cher Designs lifestyles and never has to ask It spreads ignorance It sows fear What if you could see Altar celebrity You survived 2000 years while They shake hands in billion deals What if you could see Prime altar celebrity Butterfly effect starts Flying saturated fat You smile at me from portraitsportraitは「肖像画」「似顔絵」などの意味。 With the calm of who is beyond all訳が難しかったところ。 When you invented the story we know直訳すると「私たちの知るような物語を君が作り上げたのなら」。 People put stones downここでのstoneは、有名な「あなたたちの中で罪を犯したことのない者が、まず、この女に石を投げなさい」というキリストの発言シーンのものだと考えられる(罪の女 - Wikipedia)。 He set a new trendこの文と次の「Omnipresent,~」で、ビジネスセンスのある人物が生み出した流行によって、マリアが遍在するようになったと見なせる。 A reign that invoices more than cherもっとも難解だった箇所。 Designs lifestyles and never has to ask上の文が意訳できなかったため、この文もあまり意味が通じなくなってしまっている。 What if you could see altar celebritycelebrityは、いわゆる日本でいう「タレント」「有名人」。 You survived 2000 years while現在、おおよその西暦2000年。 またsaturated(びしょ濡れ)をどう捉えるかでも訳が変わってくる。

The 57-year-old man has been lonely ever since. He s still not entirely sure why she dumped him, but thinks it could have been because he refused to let her go out to work. She took most of his money, too, leaving him with the bulk of their debts. 3 "Looking back now, I wish I had listened to her," Suzuki, not his real name, tells Shukan Post. 4 Middle-aged divorces are one of the hottest trends in Japan at the moment. It has provided fodder for the weeklies, tabloid TV shows and even one of the currently most popular small screen dramas in the country. 5 A vast majority of gray divorces of being instigated by women frustrated at decades of silently bearing often demanding husbands orders. And guys like Suzuki are starting to discover what it was they ve lost. He s hurting, getting older and doing so alone, his solitude made worse by lack of regular work. A vast majority of gray divorces of being instigated by women frustrated at decades of silently bearing often demanding husbands orders. 6 "You ve gotta have steady employment. Everybody says how good it is to be single again and how you have the chance to play around with young women, but there s not a women on the planet who s going to be around a middle-aged guy if he s unemployed and has no money," Suzuki tells Shukan Post, providing the first of his three conditions for living as a mid-life divorcee. "The second condition is that you ve got to know how to do housework. If you re cooking for yourself, you re also gonna be healthier. After you ve got past the eating, you ve got to know how to clean your home, take out the trash and all that stuff. It s tougher work than it looks. My kitchen is filthy." 7 A large proportion of Japanese men like Suzuki have been spoiled rotten, allowed to concentrate on work without ever contributing around the home. It often means the fail to realize how good their wives are giving it to them, which leads us to Suzuki s third condition of living as a dumped divorcee. 8 "Do whatever it takes to woo your wife back home, even if that means kowtowing before her in apology," he says. "Middle-aged divorce is that hard to handle." 9 Kensuke Sanada, operator of Rikonavi, a site with 22,000 unique users a month that provides information on any aspect involved in ending a marriage, says that most men in a situation such as Suzuki s have no idea what has hit them. 10 "Women instigate middle-aged divorces in about 80 to 90 percent of cases. Most of the time, the final straw has not been any single incident, but comes after years of pent-up frustration," Sanada tells Shukan Post. "A survey our site carried out showed that it was often only little things that a husband had failed to do over decades that had prompted women s decisions to divorce, such as failing to call them by their first name, forgetting wedding anniversaries or birthdays, and failing to complement them on changed hairstyles or appearance."
